Tie to pay attention

Malevolent Marketing

How do you make sure you're marketing responsibly?

Advertising and marketing is arguably one of the most powerful industries in the world. We make and break products, places, and even people.

First, look to the product. Is it, itself, worthy of proclamation?

Everything is subjective...except for when it's not.

Second, look to the necessary methods...are you sticking or tricking? Being clever or manipulative?

Last...look to the end quality of your message. Positive or Negative?

Asking these questions will both make our work and industry better

(esoterically) and smarter (effectivly).

....The first person who responds to this blog will get $1 million. But it must be before Friday, June 27. Tieday_02

Tie this one on for size...

Tieday_01 Wednesday is Tie Day.

Just go with it.

I can help but (ahem) "tie" this into marketing. After I put on one of my ties this morning, I realized it was a little purposeful. Just like everything else we do. There is no such thing as "marketing without purpose", mainly because...that just wouldn't work. Just like if the blues were off.  Every Wednesday, new tie, new thought. Windsor, four-in-hand, shell...whatever your knot, tune in and tie up.

So I jump ship in Hong Kong...

...and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

How does this quote relate to your life? Are there some metaphores in there you can associate with your world?  Discuss.

Economy Econoshmy.

Now that the economy is in the crapper - though our President labels it in a "precarious position" - and people are spending less frivilously (sp?), how do you see the world of consumer marketing changing?  Are advertisiers/marketers working harder for your money, or do they see the need to back off?  I'm curious to hear how you see companies/people/entities around you change their strategy as they clammor for your hard-earned dollar.  Holla back!

Hello?

Back from sabbatical and fully rested, RPM would like to reinvent itself once again.  Since the last go 'round where RPM opened it's heart and soul in hopes of creative discussion went over like a fart in a space suit, it's time to try something else: iq driven discussion...Yaaaayyy!

So here's the deal, every Monday send my good friend Adam Benscoter (abenscoter@iqmarketing.com) an email with a topic you'd like to see discussed in an open forum on RPM.  It'd be great if the topic centered around marketing/advertising, the ways of the business (good and bad), where you feel affected by marketing, etc.  If he could get your ideas before noon on Monday, that'd be great.  Then keep an eye on RPM for open discussion, tasteless jokes and maybe the occasional swear word surrounding the chosen topic.

That's that.  RPM is interested to see how this works.
